What do students gain when they participate in a study session abroad? When one opts to do an internship in a foreign country, amidst different work cultures, what are the pressures and challenges, and opportunities? What is the learning experience like?
I believe the students get a confidence boost and get a great learning experience. Most importantly, they really get the meaning of “learning out of the box” as they get to see how people raised in other cultures perceive the world and the same situations that we do.
Secondly the students get to learn and understand the different needs and how they shape the economy of the region and how it relates to the rest of the world’s economy. Thus, the students get a first hand experience of the “globalization of economy”.
Also, with the new work teams being global, the students get to understand the culture differences. This is a critical skill to thrive in tomorrow’s job market where majority of work is done through conference calls with people located in five different continents.
A study abroad session to India helps college students across the world in getting a better understanding of many changes unfolding in their daily life such as outsourcing of jobs. India is a country of diversity and the exposure to this diversity itself is a huge positive impact for the students.
